the show was at the variety, so i was kind of interested to see what kind of crowd they would be able to pull given their recent success in the blog world. i made sure to position myself up close with surprisingly only a handful of other people so i could take it all in. and because i'm a dork.
the band took the stage right on time and went right into their set. they started out dim and stripped down, but quickly progressed into something that i can only describe as completely uninhibited. lead singer and songwriter, adam baker, is one of the most talented, eccentric musicians i've had the pleasure of watching perform. there were moments, particularly during "complete or completing" and "carry around", where i literally got chill bumps as he belted out from down on his knees. naturally, given the change in venue, the sound was 10x better this time around. i will say that i was a little disappointed they didn't interact with the audience very much, but maybe that was because there wasn't much of an audience at all. everyone who decided to forego annuals' set and show up for the dears certainly missed out. be ashamed becaused annuals definitely outshined the dears. i mean honestly... what was with that shitty encore?! do yourselves a favor and pick up be he me.

Ally...I was at the show and I loved it! I completely agree with you about the Dears...Annuals not only were much better but I was pretty bored during most of The Dears set. I don't know if I seen a band that takes itself more seriously in a while than them...it was pretty annoying.
As much as I loved Annuals on Friday...the Rapture on Saturday was even better and pretty much was the most fun I've ever had at a show.
Also, I just checked out your myspace page real quick...we have the same profile song right now. Sweet.
i was really contemplating the rapture show, but i couldn't get up the energy. glad to hear that it was a lot of fun.
and only the cool kids have cyhsy on their profiles. we basically rule.
Huh. I thought Annuals were good, but not great. And I thought the sound at the VP was shit. I'd like to see them in a smaller venue. Your mileage may vary, I guess.
BTW, I was near the front too but wouldn't have known if I'd been standing right next to you. Go figure.
The Dears were alright too, but nothing I'll seek out in the future. They were kinda fun to watch, but I got bored enough at the end that I was thinking about what celebrities the band members looked like.
all i'm saying is that compared to the loft, it sounded like a symphony hall.
it's so funny, we've probably been right beside each other numerous times and just never known it. we should remedy this asap.
But first, go look at C&T. You've inspired me to post my Dears look-alike thingy. ;)
