I love it when I catch wind of band boys being arrogant assholes so I can point it out. Not like I was appointed to do such a duty, but I feel like I’m obligated to somewhat stick up for the people who are behind the press, mainly because I’m one of those people and I know how it feels when a dude basically tells you that you suck for not doing things exactly how they would like them done. As if we owe you anything. We don’t. If anything, YOU owe US for putting your name out there, talking you up, asking people to come out to your shows, putting you in magazines for random people to read, etc, etc. I could go on and on, but I’ll stop because you probably get the gist of what I’m trying to convey here.
So, here you have it, long overdue, the Dick of the Week. I’ve been thinking lately that this band has gotten a bit cocky for their own good, considering the fact that the new material kind of sucks compared to what they were first coming out with a couple years ago. Then I find out that they light into the editor of Southeast Performer for not covering their live show, even though they had a CD review slated to run in the same issue. I know for a fact that this editor never runs more than one thing in one issue on a band because it’s protocol. I guess they think they should be the exception because they figure since they’re already over saturating the city by playing every other week, they might as well do so in print publications, too, right?
This band also seems to think that the reason they didn't get all the coverage they feel like they deserve is because the editor has a personal issue with them. I believe that they actually told her she had no integrity. Puh-lease. Grow up and smell the professionalism, guys. If she really had a problem with you, then she probably wouldn't have run your CD for review at all...DUH.
Get off your high horse, Kill Gordon. Those of us who were there from the beginning have grown tired of the blatant brash behavior you’ve recently decided to display. No one wants to see one, much less more than one, piece of coverage on you.
Okay. I’m done. That’s all I’m going to say. It’s only my opinion here, but I know I’m not the only one with these thoughts.
Man, my list of boycotted local bands seems to be growing at an alarming rate…

Actually, I DO have that much of a problem with them and DO pretty much hate them. However, I have enough professionalism to not allow personal feelings to creep into editorial decisions. So what really ticked me off here is threefold. 1. they assume that they are naturally entitled to a review even though ultimately it is at my discretion and i am not obligated to review them anyway. 2. they both privately AND publicly accuse me of excluding them based on personal feelings and , my favorite, 3. after i explain to them the deal with the double coverages in the same issue, they have enough audacity to not only not apologize but to tell me that they have "no hard feelings," as though i've somehow still wronged them but they're gonna be mature about it. right.
At any rate, that was completely uncalled for.
Who cares anyways? 75% of the 'Indie' bands in/from Atlanta suck it hard. Kill Gordon included.
I guess that means you'll have to add The N.E.C. to your list of hated local bands as well...
I'm well aware of the N.E.C. I didn't like them before, and I'm pretty sure this won't change things.
tool bags.
Immature if you ask me. I think so many bands don't make it because they don't understand the way the industry works. You have to show respect for your peers. . . .always. Showing respect earns you the right to ask for things that they may or may not choose to deliver. Bullying people earns you the dick of the week.
Oh, and FYI, I know for a fact that having a review and a write-up in the same issue is against the publication's policy because I asked before for both for one of my artists and was told the same thing. The rules are the rules.
Yeah, I've done the same thing and been turned down. And I wrote for the damned thing.
I've always thought Kill Gordon was overrated. The songs are bland and his voice is sketch.
That band blows me.
Note to self: Don't piss off the coama girls. Whew.
Well, I mean, if you're going to act that way, then you deserve it. I wouldn't expect any less of a reaction if I walked around thinking the world owed me something.
They were on the freaking cover of the magazine not too long ago. And they've been mentioned since then. Give it a rest already.
Yeah, we are ruthless individually, but together I'm sure we're all really bad ;)
so who else is on that local boycott list?
and their freakin' cd review will run in the may issue. unfortunately i doubt i'll ever be vindicated or apologized to.
@biggiec: I've publicly made it aware that I'm not fond of Manchester Orchestra. I also wasn't really happy with how Trances Arc handled a business situation. Bain Mattox is another one who isn't exactly mannered correctly on business dealings.
As of right now, those are the ones I refuse to give any kind of chance to. Oh, and now Kill Gordon.
I'll keep to myself the other bands who are on the verge of being put on the list. All it takes is one of those irritating cocky comments they all love to make...
for the record, i still like manchester orchestra...
cool, thanks for keepin it real. just remember sometimes it goes wrong. :)
There are very few local bands that I actually hate. There are also very few that I like. Now, there are PEOPLE that I hate, but I don't let that get in the way of my opinion of their music . . . that is of course unless they're mean to my friends for no good reason ;)
Yeah, Kill Gordon isn't as good as they used to be. It's too bad really.
oh i do so love it when you do this....
The fat kid from Manchester Orchestra told me to fuck off two years ago when iasked him the name of his band at Hard Rock. I thought that was silly. Sometimes "rockstars" make mistakes, as we can be an "emotional" bunch. The true test of a man I would say however, is not whether he makes mistakes, but whether he recognizes them, and does his best to rectify.
The dude abides.

The Zen of W.
@W: Yeah, but that's the thing...they didn't and aren't going to acknowledge that the comments they made were wrong.
Rockstars with that kind of attitude can kiss my ass. I'm a woman. I'm emotional. Does that make it okay and justified for me to walk around thinking everyone should bow down and kiss my ass?
No.
I agree, W, an apology usually takes care of most things.
just remember karma, people.
i'm a firm believer in what goes around comes around and i think we've done a pretty good job of destroying whatever ego they might have had.
well yeah they've been moderately rude on occassion as well, but i've never been told to fuck off. jeeeeez.
yeah, i like them a lot and even i think that's messed up.
