Belgium Gets Kinky

The other day I stumbled across a band from Belgium that I can't stop listening to, Swimmers in Loch Ness. As far as I can tell they're brand new because there's not a lot out there about them other than the inclusion of their track Toronto in a Kinky Star podcast. Unless you are fluent in Dutch, their Myspace won't make a lot of sense to you but they're compared to Tortoise, Sufjan Stevens, and Godspeed You Black Emperor! Any way about it, I really dig the track Toronto.

Oh, and while you're at it, check out The Kinky Star Radio Show. Some of the music is Dutch, some isn't, but there's a lot of really cool new stuff coming from their direction.

Ah, somebody who speaks the language was actually nice enough to translate this from Swimmers In Loch Ness' Myspace page:

Only a month ago the Antwerpen Band "swimmer in loch ness" was allowed to perform as support for Ayco Duyster. The overture "Trieste" clearly demonstrates why they were chosen as support band: very spherical post rock is what you get to hear. With its 8 min. the song owes nothing to its audience, which seems rather unusual for the genre they play. In fact: This is thoroughbred Duyster music. The Tortoise-like sound is backed by a xylophone. Everything matches perfectly, last but not least especially because of a rather abrupt ending. The next song, Toronto, is embellished with a nice speech as well as with strings and a piano. The effect is a dolce atmosphere. Even though this might be an instrumentality used quite often, it works pretty well in this case. The successful composition, rounded off with an elegant horn section, which seemed to have run away from Sufjan Steven's band, also made Toronto a strong song. The last song " Your beat is nice" is a slowly built-up soundscape of more then 20 min in Godspeed You!Black Emperor – style – using their guitars to create a glorious explosion of re-echoing bass lines. Conclusion: SILN – no extraordinary/inventive sound, but live, the band is worth listening to.
