Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

Yeah, I am with Miss Baker. This week is a mutha!

Variac broke up. First they were changing their name, then they weren't. Now they're toast. I guess breaking up is hard to do but I must say I am sad to see them go.

Mutemath and Eisley are playing at The Tabernacle on November 3rd. Tickets are already on sale so if you feel like bending over and taking it from Ticketmaster I would recommend getting some since Mutemath is well worth the money. I wonder if Eisley and New Found Glory will collaborate on something in the future since Sherri from Eisley married Chad from NFG?

Ok, I am going to make this statement knowing full well that I might have to deal with some retaliation. The new Rilo Kiley , Under The Blacklight, is crap. I am not dissing the band as a whole because their last disc was good. People want to say, "Wow, they branched out in their songwriting!" I feel like this new disc is nothing but a disjointed pile. First it's country, then funk, then disco, and then indie-pop. It sounds like a cover band doing impersonations of real bands that have actually chosen a genre. Coaster!

*End Rant*

yeah i agree. that album is a turd. why is it getting good reivews at all?

I have no idea, honestly. I noticed that they are on the cover of quite a few magazines. I am glad I didn't pay actual money for this album.

I've only heard "The Moneymaker" or whatever, but that was so horrific that I couldn't even listen to the entire song. Yuck. I used to LOVE that band.

Mike said...

funny thing is Moneymaker may be the best song on the album

cashton said...

Ah, so more haters are coming out of the closet than I thought. Yes, I used to LOVE them too. I am with you Mike, Moneymaker is the least crap song and it's still pretty meh.

Ok, the worst is the song about a teenage girl being "ripe like a peach". Those lyrics make me feel embarrassed that somebody approved that. I guess sometimes artists shouldn't have creative control . . .

i was sad to see variac go too, but apparently there are some exciting new projects in the works.

I personally thought a few of the songs weren't bad. In fact they were all diverse songs on this record which is hard to find now these days. I would give it a second listen if you ask me.

i've actually given it a few listens.. diverse means good? the songs are mediocre at best....yeah, i'll be playing this peice of shit for years to come, and when thier next album comes out, i'll be like wow, i hope it lives up to the diverse brilliance of thier last gem.. fuck you...

alright, i may have been a bit harsh in my last comment but, heres the deal... lets meet behind the taco bell on ponce and fight it out.. you bring your fag hipster friends...and im bringing a mexican fellow who goes by Marcel who would kick your teeth in without even thinking twice about it...deal?

cashton said...

Eeeeeek! How has this turned into a back ally knife fight?

Ryan, I will agree with you. There are a few songs that "aren't bad" but I still feel that makes them far from good. I am a fan of diverse albums . . . albums where the vibe changes from song to song but I just think this album was trying too hard and missed the boat. Honestly, when I first heard the opening stuff that sounds country I dug it but then the disco killed that vibe.

I have listened a lot because I wanted to like it but I still have to give it a red light.

All the kiddos in Variac are talented so I expect big things from them in the future :)

Jenny Lewis is hot.

Mike said...

alright, im extending the olive branch... so here goes, lets put our differences aside, i mean, lets not let a subpar record come between us... and i dont even really know a mexican named Marcel... lets bury the hatchet and move on. kisses

I like, no love, the album. I think it's brilliant because I search for compilations of many different sounds coming from one band.

I'll be at their show September 29th, and I'd like to thank them for letting that happen for me.

That song "Breakin' Up" is amazing, and I've been listening to it on repeat for two weeks.

cashton said...

Don't get me wrong, I love the band. I like all of the side-projects they collaborate on and I like the last recorded stuff, especially Portions for Foxes. I think Jenny has a really solid voice too. This just isn't even the band I know. I will equate it to when U2 went through the Discoteque period. Sometimes experimentation fails.

What specifically do you like about it? Some critics are raving so my opinion isn't necessarily shared by the masses so that's why I ask . . .

cashton said...

Ok, I'm back with a compliment. I can deal with Smoke Detector. It's cute.

Rilo Kiley is one of those bands I've tried to appreciate over the years, but just can't seem to get into for one reason or another. I'm also a bit skeptical about all the fawning that's been done over them lately, too. Of course, my only experience with the new album was that Moneymaker video you posted, so what do I know?

cashton said...

Yes, what is all of the fawning about? Sometimes I am convinced that critics like something because they are "supposed" to like it.

I posted the video because it was newsworthy and conceptually a good idea, however the song is so so. I even said it sounds like "rock and roll hoochie-coo" and I am sticking by that ;)

Their Myspace has one other song from the new album posted . . .

Pairing porn stars and music videos? Almost always a conceptually good idea! However I think I'd take Add N to X's Plug Me In or Mercury Rev's Something For Joey over this one...

cashton said...

you got me ;) good point, it's not that creative of a concept. if you're somebody who lives under a rock and never listens to new music though you might jump at the idea of boobs, right? perhaps it's for the same people who like the movie superbad ;)

cashton said...

oh, i would also like to mention that when you look at ratings on itunes, all of the rilo kiley albums have a solid 4.5 or 5 star rating. this new one has an average rating waffling between 3 and 3.5. i guess actual listeners aren't as stoked as critics would like them to be, eh?

LB said...

That's only an indication if every listener rates it.

There's no way to measure this other than asking people what they think, and everyone's got their own opinion.

I didn't buy it off iTunes. And if I had, I wouldn't rate it.

cashton said...

We can pay to pull soundscan on it in a few weeks or months. That's an exact indication. I'll bet you $20 it's lower than the last album just based on listener reviews/polls on the net right now.

p.s. I love you even though we disagree :)

Variac sucks a fat dick and so do all bands who sound like them. Pick up the new Yelle album 'Pop-Up' if you want to hear some real music. FAGS.

Why are you(Cashton) the only one who comments in the 'comment' section? Do you have anything better to do?

cashton said...

Because I contribute to this blog and I am backing up my statements.

Nothing says intelligent criticism like "variac sucks a fat dick". Kudos to you, genius ;)

Mike said...

Why are you (anonymous) such a fag? thanks for helping us distinguish between "real" music and trash.. you definitely need to start a blog of your own... hipsterdouche.com perhaps?... and yeah, sucks a fat dick" is a pretty valid crticism. fucking loser.

** NERD ALERT! **

French electro-pop is in? Wow, ok. I'll get right on that.

Afterwards I am going to write an essay on how "evolved" the musical genius of Squarepusher is. Ahem.
