This weekend, the NHL All-Star Game will be played at Philips Arena. In light of that, Wyclef Jean will be at the Tabernacle on Friday night, January 25th to raise money to benefit Usher's charity, New Look Foundation.
This is significant to me, because the opening band is my favorite band of all-time forever and ever, the OLD 97s!!! I have never seen the band live because they never come here. I have only had the pleasure of watching lead singer Rhett Miller do the solo thing on two separate occasions. I only found out about this show on Friday. I almost peed in my pants.
And now, I have to curse the people holding these tickets, Ticketmaster, because the $30 ticket will end up costing around $45 after all of their fees and other bullshit they tack on because they can. Ticketmaster, I hate you more than anything I have ever hated. Like brussel sprouts. I would rather eat a million of them than have to deal with Ticketmaster.
Not only do the tickets have all the extra fees, if you go to the show listing, they didn't even get that right. Oldies 97? Wtf is that? An imaginary radio station that's hosting Wyclef at the Tabernacle? Someone needs to get a job demerit for that fudged listing. My feelings are actually a little hurt for the band. I mean, YOU GOT THEIR NAME WRONG!!!! I guess nothing is sacred anymore.
Anywho, I'm not even sure I'll be going, because of other financial problems I'm dealing with. Leah is sad. That is all for now. Thank you.

I agree. The Ticketmaster fees are a terrible thing to do to the public - especially if you're low on funds. I experienced that Saturday morning when I got tickets to a show too (Gutter Twins), but they're worth it. Hopefully someone nice will give you tickets so you can see your band and you will be happy. Till then, I'll give you a virtual powdered donut (I actually bought some for kicks today).
i wrote a blog about this when i was trying to go to travis and for the fees of two tickets i could have bought a third!! TICKET ALTERNATIVE!! :)
The Old 97s are one of my favorite bands also, and their live show (when they're all on their game, which fortunately is often) is definitely top 3. It's odd that you haven't seen them yet because, from '96 onward (minus that time around Rhett's first solo album), they've been touring constantly. Saw them a couple times at Smith's Old Bar. Once at Variety Playhouse. They played the 40 Watt in Athens a few times. And now that I'm in New York, I've seen them a couple times at Irving Plaza and at the Bowery Ballroom. They even played a free Battery Park show that got moved into a high school auditorium.
Anyway, the point being: once you start, you can't stop. First time is always the best. Lots of beer will help prepare your throat for all the sing-alongs. You'll need to go see them headline to experience the full glory. Etc.
Wyclef puts on a decent show if my memory serves, and I don't even like his music. I guess he sings now, so maybe listening to him play might not be as fun as it used to be.
Well, I was in south Georgia for college, and I missed out on a TON of music while I was there. So, anytime they played Atlanta, I had my nose in a book.
I got to see Rhett do the free show in Central Park last summer (even got backstage and had a nice conversation with him and his wife!), and even though he can totally perform and nail all the originals...his band members aren't the guys I'm listening to on my iPod all the time. Sooo, this will be an amazing show for me. Not sure if I'm going to stick around for Wyclef, though.
