nyc shows this spooky week.
guess who managed to entirely skip anything having to do with cmj?! me! man, does it suck to be in the real world...
however, this week holds my most favorite holiday, and since i'm pumped on that alone, i'm going to trek around to see some amazing stuff going on.
*tonight (monday! october 27!), at the mercury lounge, an atlanta-based band hits the stage. trances arc will be performing all of their high-energy rock at 7:30. that means we have to pray the trains will not have any hold-ups today after work...and let's hope we find $10 laying around to get in.
*tomorrow (tuesday! october 28!), at the mercury lounge AGAIN, david ford is bringing the somber songs of love and how much it sucks to the great people of nyc. this guy makes me want to throw bricks through windows. but, in a very good way. he also plays at 7:30, and it's $15 to get in. well worth the bones, folks.
*ALSO tomorrow: wow, the bridges are high-tailing the harmonies to webster hall with matthew sweet. people, if you have not seen these kids, put down the mouse and get your ass to the venue tomorrow night. i know matthew sweet has his fame, and he's awesome, but these bridges kids will lay down chills on your face. your neck hair will stand up. hell, you may even have to wipe away tears. i wish i were kidding. $25, show is at 7:00.

Concert review: TV On The Radio

It can't get any better when you walk in to a venuw hearing a band with talent. The Dirtbombs delivered a performance that aimed to satisfy and chill their listeners. One of the highlights of the entire night was their exit. After their last song, the drummer would keep playing as everyone packed up. Slowly, one piece of the drum set would go until there was nothing left for the drummer to do but stop playing- flippin' cool!
After impatiently waiting for sound checks, TVOTR graced out presence with nothing but coolness. The energy of jumping to the beat would relax and heighten throughout the show. People watching was also a plus (or minus) when you're taking a breather. Between the mosh pit hippies and the nutty show goers that towered over me, it was entertaining. Playing crowd pleasers like "Wolf Like Me" and "A Method" (which was badass!!), "Staring at the Sun" was their closer at the encore, which brought everyone to jumping like a bunch of kids on pixie sticks.

a show to see...
next weekend is going to be a doozie, what with all of the candy and costumes and blood and gore going on.
in atlanta, you can spend next thursday night, october 30th, at variety playhouse. i'll be on a train to montauk, but if i weren't...this is it! matthew sweet is playing, and his new album is only getting good press. people i didn't even know liked matthew sweet are asking me if i've heard it. so, it must be good. check him out. go buy tickets. go get candy. go.
i remember him from the 90s. which i will be resurrecting next weekend. and, if there are pictures worthy enough, you'll get to share in it. peace.

'All Together Now' DVD released today!
Okay, Beatle peedles, the documentary for the Beatles' Cirque du Soleil show, Love, is out today! Even though I saw the show in Vegas (front row seats!) over a year ago, I still get goosebumps when I hear the soundtrack. Now you can get Love-struck too with this documentary. ;-)

Why do critics have a bad attitude about The Verve's new record, Forth? I don't get it. It's a great album. I have seen several geniuses compare it to Richard Ashcroft's solo work (implying that his solo work is crap) and say that it's nowhere near the album that Urban Hymns was. Well, do your research people. Ashcroft wrote Urban Hymns as his frist solo album and then changed his mind and released it as a Verve album. And yes, Forth is a bit darker and heavier in some places but if I wanted to hear Urban Hymns I would just put that album on. Do listen . . . if you are or were ever a fan, it won't disappoint.

coldplay lost video.
i have to say, coldplay has been moving at a pretty rapid pace in becoming one of my favorite bands with this last album of theirs. i'm beginning to wonder if chris martin has been taking psychology classes or something due to his ability to get so deep and do it so well.
anyway, here is their video for "lost!" i loooove that song. it's so powerful with the drums, and then there's that lyric about waiting for the shine to wear off...ack! the dude gets me. right there. uhhh. he gets me.

I got a free song, na-na-na-na-boo-boo!
You could get free songs, too! A week or two ago, I dropped into a place that rhymes with Barmucks and noticed they had a stack of what looked like playing cards. Well, since I haven't been in this particular coffee place in ages, I was out of the loop and saw they were free song downloads. This one happened to be from"Hare Krisna" by Thievery Corporation, which is from their latest album, Radio Retaliation. It was a good track and refreshing to hear something new. It's also a nice break from what I've been listening to for the past few weeks- Kasabian's Kasabian and The Velvet Underground & Nico. Don't get me wrong, they are lovely albums and highly recommended. ;-)

when i grow up
Juliana Hatfield (of Blake Babies fame) just released a memoir called When I Grow Up on September 22nd. If you are a fan of Hatfield or if you have ever struggled with the everchanging music business, pick it up. It's a really good read.

blue brothers revue!
got a press release today that is a bright side to a bleak few weeks.
there's no ticket info yet, but when there is, i assure you, yours truly will have it.
the blues brothers are hitting atlanta! yes, that's right! the real blues brothers! (as in, dan aykroyd and jim belushi, who i just love in that 'according to jim' show) they'll be at the tabernacle on february 7. i know, it's forever away, but your 2008 calendar is dwindling, so you need something to put down for 2009. it's kind of a big deal, as they haven't performed in public in something like 20 years.
this show will raise money for the hillels of georgia.
so keep your eye out...
