Free Shows at the Loft This Week...If I Pick You.

I have of tickets to give away...thanks to the lovely people at the Loft, who are hosting some pretty awesome line-ups in the coming weeks...

This week, I have two pair to give away. Aren't you excited? If you want to enter both, be my guest. In case you're wondering, I pick winners from a hat. So it's pure luck.

First off, Thursday, May 22, Bell X 1 is playing with support from Brooke Waggoner and Rantings of Eva. In case you don't know, Bell X 1 is out of Ireland and is also the other half of the defunct band Juniper, which boasted membership from Damien Rice. The Irish never seem to disappoint (except the Fighting Irish...they're having some major performance problems) so throw your name into the hat. Email me with "Bell X 1" as the subject, please, and, thank you.

Secondly, I have millions of peaches, peaches for me, millions of peaches, peaches for free. Yes, that's right, a pair of tix to the Presidents of the United States of America with support from Ski Club at the Loft on Friday, May 23. Just email me your name and "Presidents" as the subject for a chance to win.

I'll notify winners tomorrow night - before I go to the Braves game and pray I don't get drenched...

David Ford CD Giveaway.

I've got a CD to give away from David Ford, a most awesome singer/songwriter so full of angst that it makes me warm inside. This is the same guy who is opening for Sarah Bareilles tomorrow night at Variety. In case you have been under a rock, the show is sold out, so unless you already have tickets, you are SOL, my friend. Anyway, he is pretty much the poo. I mean, really.

If you want Songs for the Road, just email me your name with the subject "David Ford." I'll announce the winner on Friday, if I don't die from the funk that's invaded my lungs before then.

Contests for You, the Reader.

I have not one, but TWO giveaways for you. How exciting! Even more exciting than knowing my girl parts are about to shrivel up and die after learning some emo turd thinks Ashlee Simpson is marriage material. Ugh.

Anyhoooo, let's focus on real talent and free stuff instead!

FIRST: If you're feeling poopy because you don't have tickets to the sold out Spoon show next Monday, April 14th, then you can redeem your mood by winning a pair of tickets to see VHS or Beta at the EARL that night. Just email your name with the subject "VHS or Beta" to enter.

SECOND: If you're in lurve with brash, man-hating/loving chicks with humor crass enough to make your liberal grandmother blush, then please feel free to enter your name to win a copy of Kate Nash's debut album, Made of Bricks, along with a paper copy of Ragged magazine (a little sub-Filter publication) with Kate's lovely face on the cover. You can go to that link and download the entire Ragged issue with Kate for free! I have the CD and I can't say enough good about it. This girl is my personal hero! Seriously. (Anyone else going to see her at Variety next Tuesday, April 15th??) To enter, send me an email with "Kate Nash" as the subject and your name.

I'll announce winners tomorrow, and I'll email you to let you know you're a winner (even though I'm sure your mom already told you you're one...).

I'll leave you with Kate Nash's "Mouthwash" video. LOVE her!

Because We're Generous.

Well, maybe I'm not the one who's generous. Maybe it's someone else acting through me! Either way, I have a contest here with a prize that I would actually want. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother offering it up.

On Monday, September 24th, VHS or Beta are going to be hitting the EARL. Yes, I know it's a Monday, but these guys have the music that sets the perfect start to the week. Really and truly, if you haven't listened to them yet, then stop reading and go do that real quick. They have a couple songs streaming on their website here.

Do you want to go to the show? What if I gave you a pair of tickets? That's right, that means you don't have to pay for them. However, you do have to be at least 21 to get into the EARL, so make sure you are before you enter this contest. How do you enter? Just email me with your name. And then I'll pick randomly. Last day to do so is Friday, September 21st at 12:00 p.m. EST. Okay?

Madness Leads to Exhaustion.

I can't tell you how much I love having a "real" job when I'm trying to keep up with the musical offerings around here. Mostly because I'd rather hang out til the wee hours every night at Smith's Olde Bar this week for Open Mic Madness, yet, the reality is, I turn into a pumpkin at midnight.

Therefore, I have no time this week for blogging about the next coolest tidbit of music news, tour, album release, whatever, etc. that I get in my inbox on a daily basis.

I did that whole judging thing last night from about 9:30 til 12:00, so I didn't actually see every band that played, but I'll just tip you off on a band that stood out. Walcott. They're from Athens. Not the kind of thing I normally listen to, and not something my girly tastes would follow, but I think out of all the bands I saw last night, they were the tightest musically.

I'll be up there again tonight hanging out, possibly judging again (we shall see about that). If you're in the mood for something fun, this really is. The place was packed last night. It was Tuesday and you couldn't move. It's something like $8.00 to get in the door, but well worth it if you're going to find someone you lurve. Oh, and I thought I heard there were a couple open slots left to enter for tonight if you can hop on it quick enough. Get in touch with the OMM guys here.

It's Pure Madness.

This happens in Atlanta every year, and it's probably one of the best ways to get a taste of some up and coming artists around the area you don't already know about. What is it? Why, it's Open Mic Madness! I've been the past three years, and it's always a fun week of, well, madness, hence the name. Put on by Josh Rifkind (the same genius behind 500 Songs for Kids), the contest will take place at Smith's Olde Bar (admittedly my fav local venue) August 13-18.

Mr. Rifkind emailed me earlier this evening asking for my services as a judge, which I will gladly do again seeing as I had a blast doing it last year. He also informed me that he's still taking submissions from bands and solo artists. Which means that if you're not savvy on the music front, you can still send him your stuff. So, go do it! (I'll make it easy for you...here's the link to submit.)

In case you need some kind of prompting, the 2003 winners were the Whigs, and uh, unless you've been under a rock, you know that they've been featured in Rolling Stone and got a pretty sweet record deal recently. And I'll attest to the fact that this is how I first learned of the Futurists, who may not have won, but are still on the fast track to being famous with that awesome sound of theirs and their pretty little faces.

We Give Stuff Away Sometimes.

So I've been sent a couple of emails with 'stuff' that I can give away to the lovely readers of this blog.

Spinning off of yesterday's post, the show at 11:11 Teahouse on Thursday, March 1st with The One AM Radio, I have your name plus one on the guest list, and a free CD, This Too Will Pass, that will be mailed to you. Yay! If you'd like to enter your name into the drawing for that, send an email and put "The One AM Radio" in the subject. Tell me what your name is, and I'll put it in a hat. Winner will be notified on Wednesday by email.

The other option of cool free stuff you can sign up to win is two tickets to the Augustana/Vega4 show at the Roxy on Friday, March 30th. This is courtesy of Vega4, and if you happened to miss it, scroll down for a free mp3 download of their single. Once again, email your name and put "Vega4" as the subject and I'll choose someone at random to be notified by email.

Oh, and here's some really exciting news...Summerbirds in the Cellar just announced they'll be opening up for Modern Skirts at 10 High THIS FRIDAY, March 2nd. I'm probably going to have to pull double duty that night. Killer line up, killer boots. It's $10.

And the Winner Is...

I put all the names of the entries to the Snowden/Forward Russia! contest in a coffee cup and picked Andy McMillan as the winner. So, congrats to him. In case you were wondering, the answer was Christian Cox, and it was on the front page of the site, as well as in the "News" section. He's a friend of mine, and he's amazing at what he does...and I know how hard he worked on that site, so you should check it out sometime. It's purty.

There's a million and one shows tonight, but if you go to one, I suggest you layer. It's cold as a polar bears naughty bits!

**Cadillac Jones @ the EARL

**Foreverdown will be playing at Under the Couch. It's an early show...like 7:30. If you're a blog reader, you may know that Jon from JonPlusTrae is in that band. If you didn't know, well, you do now. They're kind of the male version of Ally and I.

**If you're OTP, Chainestereo is having a show at the Loco's in Gainesville, GA.

That's going to do it, I think. I'm still looking for a band to headline the January showcase since I pretty much got shat on. If anyone feels like helping us out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Love Snowden? Enter the Contest...

Time again for a contest. This time, you’re going to get a pair of tickets to the Forward Russia!/Snowden show next Thursday, December 14th at the EARL. If you’re not in the loop, this is a coveted thing! It’ll be a highly attended show, and if it happens to sell out, I wouldn’t be surprised. In addition to a pair of tickets, you’ll get a signed copy of Forward Russia!’s album, all brought to you by the friendly folks at Filter.

Soooo, what is the contest? I like trivia, so let’s go with that. How about a trivia question about Snowden, since they’re from Atlanta? Sounds thooper! Okay, email me at addict79@gmail.com with the answer, and I’ll pick a winner this Friday. I repeat, you have until this Friday to find the answer. It’s an easy question, too, so don’t get your panties in a wad.

**Snowden launched a new website this summer. Who is the designer?

Email your answers in, and I’ll keep them until Friday, when I pick someone.
